Most Switzerland itineraries you find online begin in Zurich and work outward.
That is fine if you already live in Europe. From India, the trip is shaped by
something else first: whether your city has a nonstop.
Three Indian cities do. SWISS flies nonstop to Zurich from Delhi and Mumbai,
and Air India also runs Delhi to Zurich. From 25 October 2026, Bengaluru joins
them with five flights a week, becoming SWISS's third Indian destination.
Every other city in the country connects through a Gulf or European hub.
This matters more than it sounds. A nonstop landing in Zurich at six in the
morning gives you a usable first day. A one-stop routing that puts you on the
ground at four in the afternoon does not. We build the first two days of every
itinerary around your real arrival time instead of a generic Day 1 template.
Mumbai is the cleanest arrival in the set. You land at 06:20, clear
immigration, walk down to the railway station inside Zurich Airport and
check into a Lucerne hotel before lunch. Delhi has the most departures,
so it builds the tightest itineraries. Bengaluru's new service lands
mid-morning, which finally gives south India a same-day start.
Zurich, where every India nonstop lands. The airport rail station sits under the terminal,
so Lucerne is about an hour from baggage reclaim.
If your city has no nonstop
Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kochi, Jaipur and the rest connect once. Gulf hubs (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi) on Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad usually give the shortest layovers and the most departures. Frankfurt or Munich on Lufthansa feeds the SWISS Zurich schedule directly. Istanbul on Turkish Airlines is often the cheaper fare and the longer connection.
Door to door, budget twelve to sixteen hours. Leave at least two hours for the connection if bags are checked through, because the Gulf hubs are large and gate changes are routine.
Zurich or Geneva
There is no nonstop from any Indian city to Geneva, so every Geneva arrival involves at least one change.
Choose by route rather than fare. Zurich suits a trip built around Lucerne, Interlaken, the Jungfrau region
or Mount Titlis .
Geneva suits Zermatt, Montreux and the Lake Geneva shoreline.
The option most people miss: fly into one and out of the other. Zurich in, Geneva out lets you cross the
country in a straight line instead of doubling back, and with a
Swiss Travel Pass
that costs nothing extra in rail fare.
When to fly out of India
April to June is the big family season, driven by school holidays.
The meadows are green, every mountain railway is running and the days are long.
It is also when Swiss hotels sell out first, so lock accommodation three to four months ahead.
September and October are the quiet win. Fares out of India soften, the European summer crowds have gone
and the light is remarkably clear. November to March is snow season: Diwali, Christmas and New Year weeks
spike, while the gaps between them are genuinely good value.

The Schengen visa, from an Indian passport
Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa.
You apply to the Swiss representation because Switzerland is your main destination, through the visa
application centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune,
Chandigarh, Jalandhar and Kochi.
What causes trouble is documentation, not eligibility. You need confirmed accommodation for every night,
a day-by-day itinerary matching those bookings, proof of funds, and travel insurance carrying at least
€30,000 of medical cover valid across Schengen. Processing runs to about fifteen calendar days, but
appointment slots for April to June disappear months ahead. Open the file six to eight weeks before travel,
earlier for summer.
Every itinerary you build with us produces exactly what the consulate asks for: a dated route,
hotel confirmations for each night, and the transport bookings that link them.
We are a Switzerland-based tour operator, so those confirmations come from the supplier rather than a reseller.
What sits inside a package
Our
Switzerland tour packages
cover accommodation for every night with a real confirmation, rail travel across the country,
and the mountain excursions you select —
Jungfraujoch
,
Titlis,
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
and the rest.
Because it comes up in almost every enquiry from India, you can add
Indian meal vouchers
so nobody is hunting for vegetarian food in a mountain village at eight in the evening.
Meal vouchers are redeemable at partner restaurants across the country,
including in the mountain villages where vegetarian options run out first.
International flights are not included. Fares vary widely between Indian departure
cities and move week to week, so most travellers get a better result booking flights
themselves and letting us build the ground itinerary around the arrival time.
Choosing your base
Where you sleep decides how much of the trip you spend on trains. For a first visit of
eight days or less, two bases is usually the right answer. Three means you spend a
morning packing more often than you see a mountain.
❮
Lucerne
Most efficient base. Titlis, Pilatus and Rigi are all day trips, and Zurich airport is an hour away.
Interlaken
Between two lakes, gateway to the Jungfrau region. Best if mountains and adventure are the point.
Zermatt
Car-free and reached only by train. Worth the detour when the Matterhorn is genuinely on your list.
❯
Lucerne suits a tight first or last night after a long flight from India, because you can reach it before lunch on a morning arrival and get back to the airport comfortably on the way home.
Budgeting in rupees
Switzerland is expensive and there is no honest way around it. Three costs decide your budget, in this order: the international airfare, accommodation, and mountain excursions. The items people forget are the excursions, which sit outside most headline prices, and restaurant meals, which add up faster than expected.
Where you can save without lowering the quality of the trip: travel in September or the shoulder weeks either side of peak, stay in one base and take day trips instead of moving every night, and book the mountain days you actually care about rather than all of them. Our breakdown of what a Switzerland trip actually costs goes through it line by line. Everything on this page is quoted in Indian rupees at checkout and recalculated live, so what you see reflects the current rate rather than a figure set months ago.
