How to Use the Swiss Travel Pass: A Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

Blog Section

    • Using the Swiss Travel Pass is simpler than most travellers expect: there are no gates to pass, nothing to stamp and no app to set up. There are still a few rules that catch first-timers, from choosing the start date to reserving panoramic seats. This guide walks through everything between booking and your last train.

Before you fly: choose the right start date

A consecutive Swiss Travel Pass is valid from midnight on the start date you choose until 5 am on the morning after the last day. If you take the train from Zurich or Geneva airport on the day you land, make that your start date so the airport train is covered. Save the PDF on your phone and, as a backup, print it on plain A4 paper.

    • On the train: what to carry and show

Carry your original passport, because conductors check the pass against your ID and a photocopy is not accepted. Then simply board any train, bus, boat or tram in your class; no reservation is needed on ordinary services. When the conductor comes round, show the QR code on your phone or the printout. That is all there is to it.

    • Using the Swiss Travel Pass Flex

A Flex pass is not valid until you activate a day. Go to activateyourpass.com, enter the reference number from your receipt with your name and date of birth, and select your travel dates. Each day must be activated before your first journey that day and runs from midnight until 5 am the next morning. You can change an activated day until 11:59 pm the evening before, but not on the day itself. Museum entry and mountain discounts apply only on activated days.

    • Panoramic trains need a seat reservation

The pass covers the fare on Switzerland's panoramic trains, but three of them need a paid seat reservation on top: the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express and the Gotthard Panorama Express, which runs from spring to autumn. The GoldenPass Express and the Luzern–Interlaken Express offer optional reservations, which are worth making at busy times. All other trains need no reservation.

    • Mountain tickets with your pass

On Rigi, Stoos and Stanserhorn, show your pass at the base station and ride free. On other mountains, buy the discounted ticket in advance or at the station, and show your pass with it when asked. Booking mountain tickets together with your pass is easiest, because the discount is applied automatically and everything is paid in one go.

    • The SBB app

A pass bought from a seller such as SWISStours cannot be added to the SBB Mobile app, and it does not need to be. Keep the PDF ready for inspection. Do download the app, though: it is the best free timetable for your trip, showing platforms, live delays and connections, and you can use it to buy reservations and tickets the pass does not cover.

    • Common mistakes to avoid

Starting the pass a day late and paying separately for the airport train is the most common. Others include leaving the passport at the hotel, boarding a Glacier or Bernina Express without a reservation, forgetting to activate a Flex day before the first journey, and assuming the pass covers journeys into France, Italy or Germany. It is valid only inside Switzerland.

    • Frequently asked questions

Do I need to activate my Swiss Travel Pass?

No, not the consecutive pass; it is valid automatically from midnight on your start date. Only the Swiss Travel Pass Flex needs each travel day activated online.

Can I add my Swiss Travel Pass to the SBB app?

A pass bought from a seller such as SWISStours cannot be added to SBB Mobile. Keep the PDF on your phone or printed on A4.

Do I need a seat reservation with the Swiss Travel Pass?

Not on normal trains, buses and boats. The Glacier Express, Bernina Express and Gotthard Panorama Express need a paid reservation.

Is the Swiss Travel Pass valid from Zurich airport?

Yes. Trains from Zurich and Geneva airports are covered on any day your pass is valid.

What if my phone battery dies?

Carry a printed copy on plain A4 paper; it is equally valid. Always carry your original passport.

    • Final thoughts

Once you have the right start date, your passport and the PDF on your phone, the Swiss Travel Pass almost disappears: you simply get on and go. Reserve your panoramic seats and book your mountain tickets before you travel, activate Flex days the night before, and spend the rest of the trip looking out of the window.
